The key figure in a Justice Department investigation into sex trafficking allegations involving Matt Gaetz told the House Ethics Committee that the former congressman had sex with her when she was 17 years old, according to a report.
The woman, who is now in her 20s, was subpoenaed by the ethics panel over the summer and testified that Gaetz had sex with her when she was a minor and still in high school, ABC News reported on Thursday.
The Florida Republican vehemently denied the allegations.
“These allegations are invented and would constitute false testimony to Congress,” Gaetz said in a statement provided to The Post. “This false smear following a three-year criminal investigation should be viewed with great skepticism.”
DOJ informed Gaetz last year that it would not bring charges against him related to the probe, but the House Ethics Committee has been running a separate investigation into the former congressman, who abruptly resigned from Congress Wednesday after being nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as attorney general.

Sources told ABC News that the ethics panel conducted interviews with at least six women who allegedly partied with Gaetz and were paid by his former friend, Joel Greenberg.
Greenberg, a former local tax official in Florida, pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges, including sex trafficking, in May of 2021.
As part of the plea deal, Greenberg admitted that he recruited women for commercial sex acts and paid them more than $70,000 from 2016 to 2018, including at least one underage girl – who was the woman who told the ethics panel that Gaetz had sex with her as a minor, ABC News reported. ***

I may be wrong but I always thought that the legal age was 16. 15, no, but 16 legal age, in other words, no longer a minor.
Usually there is an age limit on the partner’s age. For example some states allow that a 16 year old can legally consent to someone who is 18 or under. However she or he can’t consent to sex with somebody older. Makes no sense but that is how it is. The narrow age range of consent is usually part of Romeo and Juliet exceptions to statutory rape laws.
If there was anything to it the FBI would have been on Gaetz like white on rice.

The stuff that happened in high school! I was on a double date, my date had to get home early, so did the other gal’s boy date. So I dropped him at his house, then the other gal asked my date if it was okay if she and I had coffee together for a while. I then dropped my date at her house, and I went with the other gal to her house. I was naive. The other gal was much taller than me, and we were all friends in school, and her boyfriend was a karate expert. So we’re in her kitchen having coffee, and started making advances on me. I strongly protested all the way to the living room, etc. to her bedroom. A couple weeks later, I’m with a couple guy friends and I couldn’t hold back, had to tell them what happened. My friends said “You too!”. Yep, she was a nympho out to score. Sure it takes two to tango, but sometimes someone will make you dance no matter how hard you resist.

I don’t know the law in all 50 states but I’m licensed to practice in two of them. The age difference is not a factor in either of them as long as one party is at least 16. The 4 year rule you’re referring to applies to situations where one of the parties is at least 12 but younger than 16. So a 20 year old engaging with a 13 year old is illegal. But a 17 year old with the same 13 year old is not (depending on birthdays). Pretty messed up.
