The holy wars have not been canceled yet, despite what you may have heard on cable news. In New York City, the largest Catholic school in the Big Apple recently canceled the celebration of Columbus Day. That would be St. John's University , which you may have thought would be the one place where such traditions might be honored. That's not the case, however. At issue is the university's decision to "cancel" Columbus Day. Why? Because it doesn't pay sufficient homage to Native Americans Day, of course. So Columbus has been politicized out of existence at St. John's. (NY Post)
St. John’s — New York’s largest Catholic university — has gone woke and no longer refers to Monday’s holiday as “Christopher Columbus Day’’ in honor of the explorer hailed as a devout Christian.
Some Italian-American civic leaders and alumni are now ripping the Catholic institution for dissing the famous but controversial Italian explorer.
“To not acknowledge Columbus is insane,” said Angelo Vivolo, president of the Columbus Heritage Coalition. “Of course it’s an insult.”
Former Brooklyn state Assemblyman Peter Abbate, a St. John’s alum who earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science, agreed.
So what was the "compromise" that was worked out? The school calendar now lists the day as “fall mini-break – university closed. No classes.” How very worshipful of them. Columbus was originally thrown under the bus when Bill de Blasio was the Mayor. He declared that Columbus brutalized and enslaved the indigenous people and, as such, could not be so honored by the City.
But Bill de Blasio was a secular activists trying to please the far left wing of his party. St. John's is essentially the definition of what passes for a religious institution in the modern-day Saddam and Gomorrah that New York City has become. It was supposed to be a final bastion from the storm. How did this happen?
Even the city's sanitation department came up with a better compromise than that. They previously declared that on Monday, Oct. 14, there would be "no trash, curbside compost or recycling collection" because of "Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day." Granted, they still took the "Columbus" out of Columbus Day and worked in the Indigenous People angle, but they at least kept the Italian angle alive. No such nod was offered by St. John's however.
How much further can New York City fall? It's hard to avoid the feeling that some sort of reckoning is on the way. And when an institution like St. John's joins in on the decline, the bottom may be approaching quickly.
Prayers for Trump to win. This madness needs to stop.
I call it “Indignant People’s Day”.
Saddam and Gomorrah?
OF COURSE. THEY HATE JEWS.
Why weren’t Native Americans outraged by Columbus Day back in 1950? Social media is driving this crap.
I would have expected this from the Jesuits at Fordham but not the Vincentians at St. John’s.
My alma mater. When they send me another letter looking for a handout I will respond accordingly
Columbus should be honored, as the 1st illegal alien in the New World. Call it "1st Whitey Day".
The Saint John’s athletic teams were known as the Redmen until 1993. Then they changed to the Red Storm due to Indian sensitivity. The Redmen were the Redmen for the same reason Syracuse were the Orangemen — the color of the uniform they wore. The Orangemen became the Orange, perhaps to not offend orange people. I think that one was just to satisfy the Nike marketing team. Fordham University used to have a big FU on it. That one is gone too.
“Orange men” is a term used to describe Protestants in North Ireland. It might be seen by some as a pejorative.
What do the Knights of Columbus think about this?
I won’t be surprised if someday, Columbia University changed its name..,
“Orange men” is a term used to describe Protestants in North Ireland. It might be seen by some as a pejorative.
The New York usage is generally in reference to its Dutch heritage. The Netherlands football (soccer) team wears all orange. The team is known as the Orange, and the fans as The Orange Legion.
Northern Ireland Orangemen reference back to William of Orange, a Dutch protestant of the House of Orange, who seized the thrones of Catholic King James in 1688. In Northern Ireland it signifies Protestant supremacy over Catholics, aka Fenians.
The official flag of Ireland is green, white and orange. The Catholics of Northern Ireland call it green, white and gold.

Orange is the official school color, adopted as such in 1890. Prior to that time, the school's colors were rose pink and pea green. In 1898, a proposition to add secondary blue color was vehemently opposed by students and alumni. According to an 1890 newspaper article uncovered by the Syracuse Post Standard, the orange was originally a reference to the Netherlands, which first colonized New York State. It's common in upstate New York for place names to make reference to the Dutch heritage. In a similar way, the original settlement that became Albany was called Fort Orange.
Nike, the company that convinced Syracuse to ditch Orangemen nickname, is at it againPublished: Mar. 23, 2015, 2:40 p.m.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Nike, the company that convinced Syracuse University officials to ditch the school's iconic Orangemen nickname in 2004, is at it again.
Last November, the University of Tennessee announced its decision to stop using the nickname Lady Volunteers, or Lady Vols, for its women's athletic teams except for women's basketball.
Much like Syracuse's dumping of Orangemen in favor of Orange for all of its teams back in 2004, Tennessee's decision met with outrage from much of its fan base.
It appears now that both decisions were the result of input from Nike.
Syracuse officials made the switch from Orangemen to Orange in 2004 after two years of consulting with Nike regarding the school's desire to re-brand its athletic teams.
