Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-N.J.) fell silent after being asked by a debate moderator and his Democratic opponent whether he supports enacting mass deportations of migrants, a policy that former President Trump has called for.
The moment came during a debate between Kean and Democratic candidate Sue Altman on Sunday as part of the race to represent New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District in the House. Micah Rasmussen, the director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics and one of the moderators, asked Kean if he would support the policy, and if so, how the costs of the policy will be handled and what will be deprioritized to ensure the policy can get done.
Kean said that millions of undocumented migrants from various countries have entered the U.S. in the past few years and the situation would have been solved if the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy stayed in place. The policy, which the Biden administration ended, required migrants to stay in Mexico while awaiting their court date on whether they can be admitted to the U.S.
Kean said deporting the individuals who are “criminals” is “where you need to start” and accused Altman of having an “extreme” position, saying she supports allowing people to illegally come across the border without any checks.
“We need to ensure that we have the people who can be leaders, to find the common ground, to secure our southern border, make our community safe,” he said.
Altman responded to him that he had dodged the question and asked him again if he supports deporting migrants.
The event was then silent for eight seconds as Kean did not respond. Another moderator stepped in to tell Altman she had 35 more seconds on her rebuttal and then Kean would have a chance to add more.

RINO?
Definitely RINO.
Sort of, but has to take “moderate” stances to be elected in NJ.
Three different questions, one of which assumes facts not in evidence.
Yes, but less obnoxiously so than Christine Todd Whitman. There are RINOs who understand that their time is over and accept inevitable defeat in good grace as they were taught to at Loomis-Chafee and Deerfield. The Ryan and Flake and Kinzinger and Cheney types do not have the aristocratic bearing to accept loss gracefully, and shred their dignity as well when they go down in flames.
“to illegally come across the border without any checks”
See how they kick the can to the Left?
The old standard was you had to comply with the immigration laws simply to be allowed to stay.
Now they water it down to needing to be “checked” as you cross into the United States.
It’s the smallest of things a country could do. And the Leftists don’t even want that. So they shift the argument to whether there will be even a simple request for documents as you sashay into the US.
The question about cost of deportation could be answered that it is cheaper than giving them all free money like now.
If they dealt with it properly, the illegals would be glad to leave on their own.
He should have expected a question like that one, it being so close to the national election.
Not necessarily a deal breaker for him, but it shows some lack of preparation.
He maybe didn’t want to say either answer, but there are ways to deal with that without being silent.
A professional politician or public speaker learns how to keep talking without saying much of anything.
The really good ones can turn the BS on, and off at will,
unlike certain Vice Presidents.
Disappointing.
I’m constantly amazed by people who think they can hold high office without having some moral fiber, and without ultimately taking a stand on contentious issues.
I guess they do it because being a spineless goober often seems to work.
If they were given desk appearance tickets for immigration court, air travel that bypasses TSA, EBT cards, cell phones, and luxury hotel accommodations, then they are hardly "undocumented."

We gave to him, and I hope this doesn’t hurt him.
He is a politician and knows he can’t appear too extreme or too RINO. Also, difficult for an aristocratic Republican to win statewide, like in his father’s time, so ran for Congress in a well off district.
Yep. Rino meat.
I’m surprised they didn’t find them in a corner, sucking his thumb after that question. What a cuck!
Instead of standing up like a man and saying, people who come here illegally deserve to be deported!
The “Final Jepoardy” quiz show music was playing in his head for those 8 seconds, lol.
No video of event? At the mercy of leftist internet rag...
8 seconds? Did he have tia? Exhaustion? Diabetes?
Anyone who doesn’t support deportation please step forward and volunteer to adopt an illegal immigrant. You can be responsible for feeding, sheltering and medical care and then they won’t be immediately deported. Just put your money where your mouth is.
The correct answer would have been, “Yes, I support the policy, and I don’t care how much it costs, it will cost more to keep them.” That would at least have excited his base.
Namby-pamby gets you nowhere.
