Regulations being considered by California air board could dramatically raise gas prices

The California Air Resources Board is set to vote on new regulations next month, and if passed, they could pass costs over to customers at the gas pump.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the plan would limit the carbon intensity in fuels by expanding a program instituted in 2011 that penalized refineries that create high-carbon fuel, like diesel and gasoline. New regulations would increase the penalties, thus increasing the price of production.

In September of last year, CARB estimated the regulations could raise gas prices by 47 cents per gallon, but analysts, according to The Times, say customers at the pump could be paying 65 cents more per gallon if the regulations go through.

Steven Cliff, CARB’s chief, told The Times that price estimations haven’t been updated by the board because it “not equipped” to do so. He also claimed that the amendments would be a “net positive” when considering economic impacts such as job creation.

Steven Cliff the head of CARB won’t be too negatively affected by this

Job title Total pay benefits Steven S Cliff Executive Officer, California Air Resource Board State of California, 2023 $325,724.47

Because increased energy costs always fuel job creation.

This is not a regulation, but a tax on gas and diesel vehicles. If they keep raising this tax, eventually EV’s will become competitive.
They are forcing us into EV.

Phoenix is getting gas from California refineries. It looks like we will have to pay this tax too?!

“..Their Insanity is not going to work. Sooner or later, there will a Revolution ,LOL...”

We could start with this year’s tax return: Just pay $750 with a note saying; “It’s the best we can do.” /s

Cali should just stop with the baby steps and set the price of gasoline to $20 a gal and minimum wage to $80 per hour.

An unelected body raising taxes, the classic definition of tyranny--taxation without representation.

Those figures would only be good in the year they were issued. The following year those rates would have to go up, even doubling.

at current electricity rates thru Calif, averaging $.35/kWh, I doubt EV’s will ever become enticingly competitive, when the purchase/lease price plus home charging system ($2K) plus increased auto insurance premiums are added into the equation. According to ValuePenguin, EV’s are about $4,000/yr ($344/mo) to insure, higher in Calif.

Home charging averages $0.35/kWh while public lot charging can average around $0.55/kWh, depending on area and time of day. At 1207 miles/mo, EV’s will use 402kWh or 3 miles per kWh. 402 x $.35 = $140.00. If half the kWh are from public charging that increases to $70 + $111 or $181/mo. For an ICE at 1207 miles/mo, averaging 25miles/gal combined, cost is 48gals x $4.50/avg price per gal regular = $217/mo. So in Calif, the EV may save $36-$77/mo ($217 - $181 or $140) but that may well be eaten by monthly insurance increases, non=warranty items (like EV-specific tires) and/or personal time spent waiting on/ finding a public charging station. The savings could also be adversely affected by electricity rate increases to meet demand. (California’s “green” energy is expensive).

Do NOT do it!
That will put you in jail for filling frivolous return!

You cannot do what they can! They are the GOVERNMENT!
They care about you!
They are the smartie kids fresh out of college and the bureaucrats not doing anything for 30 years with fat pensions.

YOU on the other hand, are just some Joe Shmo, you cannot even kiss their butts!

Electricity in AZ is about half, gas at least a buck less.
Gas in Phoenix is expensive, because it is imported from CA and by orders of the Biden admin! They deemed us an air quality hazard, so we need the expensive gas to save us!

you're very welcome and sure - no worries about reposting, my FRiend. If the math helps someone, I'm good! :) if you want to use a reference link for the math, I used a July 25, 2024 article from Kelly Blue Book

The KBB article also has a neat little averages chart for kWh rates per state. The $0.55 public lot charging estimate I used in the math came from the same article, way down at the bottom under "Finding the Right Plug..." I used the rate given for Electrify America Pass Pricing and EvGo pricing (56 cents but I used 55 cents)

yup, we are the highest in the nation, conus at least. Hawaii has us beat by 10cents but they’re in the middle of nowhere. Trump may get our pump price down again but I don’t see our electric going down; the greenies will make sure it doesn’t. And if the greenies don’t get us, the utilities will keep adding forest fire damages onto the bills so no help in that department. Phoenix heat was brutal this summer so I bet those lower rates helped with running A/c 24/7. We usually get about the same summers here, just north of Temecula, CA, but do have the benefit of onshore airflow some days. Y’all are in a big bowl with no way to cool off ! I feel for ya.

I do not know how much can Trump help you with gas.
We are having exactly the same gas, piped from California, and it costs a dollar less!
It is funny - Tucson gets its gas from TX, Phoenix from CA.
Gas in Tucson is substantially cheaper than the one in Phoenix, despite that the taxes are the same.
That changes only, if there is some kind of accident or hurricane in TX! Then, suddenly, Phoenix gas becomes cheaper for some time!

Electricity is cheap even comparing to most states.

Reason - while ago, the lefties put a proposition on the ballot about green energy. It was soundly defeated. Then they tried back way, twisting arms of the Corporation commission (which sets the electricity rates) to implement some green mandates.
We protested and the commission backpedaled.
I, personally, got heavily involved in this! Something I am proud of!
The Summer was hot, but we kept cool. The max bill, for rather big house, was $350. We usually pay little over $100/month!
