The City of Okeechobee, Florida adopted an illegal ordinance shortly before Hurricane Helene made landfall last week, which banned the sale of guns and ammunition and prohibited firearm possession in public by anyone other than law enforcement or members of the military.
Donald C. Hagan, the Chief of the Okeechobee Police Department, signed the illegal ordinance, copies of which quickly rebounded around the internet. Chief Hagan did not immediately return calls or emails seeking his comments for this story.

Sheriffs are typically the heads of county police. Hagan is a municipal police chief.
i’m sure this kept the criminals from using weapons while violating the law
If this is as reported the chief may be looking for a new job.
Men have been fired for much less. He violated the Florida Constitution not to mention the federal.
guess all of the “free state of Florida” isn’t free from liberal turkeys. GET RID OF HIM! before someone dies because they can’t protect themselves from armed criminals. remember friends...”when seconds count your bozo sheriff is only minutes away”. or hours.
Didn’t catch that one, thanks.
No change in the issue though, that Chief might want to enjoy his last term in office.
.
The second amendment says you can’t do that, sheriff.
The second amendment says you can’t do that, sheriff.
Exactly, it’s not a gun problem, it’s a crime problem!
Somebody was on quite a power trip.
Exactly.
.
11,000 republicans to 4,000 democrats in the area and you’d think they’d not put up with this. Maybe they didn’t know and were preparing for the hurricane. I definitely hope they just didn’t care.
I hope they cared is my last line.
This has surely gotten to Governor DeSantis who is the controlling legal authority within the FL Statute Cited— PRIOR to the existence of the Governor’s directions to employ the Statute.
So, this “chief” IS going to hear from the Governor as well as the Attorney General of the State. It is not legal whatsoever what this person did (certain to lawyer up on the decision as advice from the City’s lawyer(s) to do so.
It is NOT in keeping with the Statute. He will hear from the Governor. Maybe he should talk with Polk County’s REAL Sheriff Grady Judd. See: you tub on Grady’s stance on 2nd Amendment, and FL Law!
You’re missing the real problem with the order. Yes it banned sales of guns and ammo, but only for 2 days. You had better already have your gun before the flood hits.
The concerning part of the order banned possession of a gun in a public place. People need to be able to defend themselves if they leave their homes, especially during civil breakdown.
That needs to be brought to the attention of the state AG, it’s very much illegal. People should have ignored it in totality.
Been seeing this on X. Note the first line of the memo, letter, whatever. This was voted on and approved by the city council. I believe DeSantis has already addressed it. Apparently a whole bunch of idiots in this town.
Who cares? Government always views hurricanes as an opportunity for a power grab. You want to whine about your civil rights? Lots of swamps and gators in Florida.
