Man caused climate change is a lie.

There is technology to use coal to create “clean’ energy. The UK has enough coal to provide energy for a long time.

That people should be cold and hungry on an island made of coal and surrounded by fish!

Germany was headed there - and they got rid of Merkle and started building new plants - how long before Britain wakes up?

This winter the European weather will be affected by La Niña. Colder than normal temperatures are to be expected.

Britcicles for everyone.

Well, UK can still rely on its largest power producer, Drax, which burns wood pellets from the US.

In the old days, Labour would have rioted over something like this. One of the main reasons the British Left started to hate Thatcher so much is because she shut down coal mines and inefficient plants. Now they are shutting down even efficient plants.

“Low carbon” electricity includes nukular, which accounts for 14.2% of domestic UK production (amazingly available under clouds and low-wind conditions!) + 10.7% imported from French nukes.

So between nuclear and nat. gas (32%), Britain is overwhelming dependent on non-”green”, aka 24/7 electrical generation.

I’m guessing that the official statistics don’t reflect realities of wind/solar reliability. As seen in this article, diesel is used to backup wind/solar:

I’m just an ignorant American, but I do have a high school education, I read a bit, & am smart enough to know that the ‘green energy” that some of our home-grown idiots seem to be so proud of will eventually be very insufficient. Didn’t need a college education to figure that one out. The UK may arrive there sooner than America does, but I’m wondering if anyone will learn from them? First of all, there is no way this will do anything but make for larger energy bills. The shortages will probably come before we (meaning some of us) realize that this is not the way to go. Our country’s leaders should be the best & brightest, but this “green energy” fiasco proves that not many of them are. If what I’ve read is correct, part of Europe (Germany, I think) has already reverted back to proven forms of energy. When will others follow suit? After it is too late? I think a really hard winter or two might possibly wake some up before then. Hopefully, that would hit D.C. first.

They’ll be burning peat to stay warm in not too long.

Okay. Thought so.

Anything about coal or natural gas or oil must be investigated because the media is not capable of basic mathematics.

1) UK coal production in 1981 was 127.5 million tons. In 1991 it was 94 million metric tons. 2001 — 32 million tons. 2011 18 million metric tons. 2021 — 1.1 million metric tons.

2) Reread that item 1. This has been going on for decades. It’s not a Green initiative. Nobody passed laws to end coal in the UK. Well, actually a law was passed — by God. Meaning, they had been mining for 100s of years. How long did you think that could go on? They have run out.

3) Coal reserves as of 2020 — 26 million tons. They could get it all and not even dent that decline curve of production. That’s less than their 2001 annual production!

4) Replacement as a source of electricity, like in most places, nat gas and nuclear. Those two added to 47%. Wind, solar and hydro were 36% and 10% of electricity was imported. Note they made no electricity from oil. This is normal.

In general you have to read far past the Green celebration of things to actually see what is going on. They shut down their coal plant because they no longer have domestic coal to fuel it.

Geology does not care about politics.

Thank you. The hot air on this subject (from all sides) does need such a reality check. One further point you could have made is that for decades most of the coal used for e-generation in the UK has been imported.

On the plus side, the vegans will soon be starving to death as crops begin to wither and die off.

Why would crops die off if coal is not burnt I’m not seeing the logic. If you mean an island of 100 million people who burn less than 1 million tonnes a year is going to cause plants to die is crazy talk. Even if humans stopped burning anything anywhere co2 would still rise for a few years then level out as the oceans reached a new equilibrium around 450 ppm. Then the bicarbonate and carbonate cycle will over the next few centuries pull co2 down to interglacial levels which over the last 200,000 years or so have been in the 180ppm range. All of our food plants evolved during those and past interglacial levels. C4 plants can pull down to single digit co2 ppm levels and C3 grass all can pull down to 100ppm. There is zero risk of co2 starvation in the next 1000 years. Corn is a c4 plant it has shown increasing yields as co2 has crossed 400ppm.
