Legalizing it gives govt the ability to regulate it, which likely reduces STD risks, robbery risks (on both sides of the equation), gives another tax revenue source, etc. It's probably the one position they'd take (pun intended) that wouldn't spread (and another) more misery (as their initiatives usually do).
The moment they regulate sex work is the moment they'll try to regulate sex even among married couples. No thank you.

It wouldn’t do any of that, it would be like pot, there would be some new legal prostitution, with open advertising and new hiring of young women and recruiting, marketing to new customers and so on, but regular hookers and prostitution would still be operating without cops harassing them because the registered with the government and the non-registered would blend together and would be pretty much left up to the IRS to bother with if they could.
