Al Smith was that vanished beast, a conservative Democrat. It’s one of the great misfortunes of American history that he lost to Hoover in 1928. IMO, Smith would have prevented the Depression, or at least mitigated it more effectively than either Hoover or FDR.

Speaking as a Catholic, I've seen what they support, and I have to agree with you.

Except, their Al Smith Dinner must go on.

It seems to me it's invaluable--requiring each candidate for CIC to reveal his answer to the following question: "Can you string three words together on your own?"
