I was on the Dean’s Search Committee at a well-known university. I learned that the “in-house” candidate had plagiarized a paper from his grad student that he later published as his own. I brought this fact to the Committee and the Academic Dean who headed the Committee more-or-less ignored it. I later found out that the in-house candidate (the College of Business Administration) agreed to policies that the President of the university wanted and, if agreed to them, he would get the job. He did get the job even though several other candidates had significantly better qualifications (e.g., Ivy League degrees, more articles/books, and experience).

I tended my resignation a few weeks later as the deal would have hurt everyone in the COBA.
