Victor Davis Hanson: A Forgettable Warped Debate
American Greatness ^ | 12 Sep, 2024 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 09/12/2024 5:17:19 AM PDT by MtnClimber

The sappy Harris won the visuals; the grouchy Trump likely the issues. But the real losers were ABC and its two partisan moderators, Muir and Davis.

The September 10th presidential debate went down as expected. Summed up, it was Sappy and the Blob pile on Grouchy.

The swarmy and evasive Kamala Harris preened, posed, and proffered empty platitudes.

The ABC moderators proved they were predictably and shamelessly biased.

And an irate Donald Trump confirmed that he was too touchy and easily triggered.

Harris’s instructions were not to explain her agenda. She never defended disowning policies that she had embraced as a lifelong, self-confessed, “woke” “radical.”

Instead, Harris’s threefold strategy was simple enough—and it mostly worked.

One, goad Trump as a coward and racist. Then smile and call for unity, kindness, and an end to such name-calling.

Harris’s orders were to zero in on hair-trigger irrelevancies that would incite and sidetrack the thin-skinned Trump.

So, Harris claimed his massive rallies were failures, crackpot—and worst of all, boring!—as she falsely added that weary attendants left early.

All that was missing from her adolescent putdowns was Barack Obama’s earlier convention speech obscenity that Donald Trump supposedly suffered from undersized genitalia.

In Harris’s upside-down, projectionist world, ex-president Trump caused the Biden-Harris disastrous skedaddle from Afghanistan.

He was accused of being mostly responsible for the effects of the global COVID-19 plague that killed over 100 million.

“The swarmy and evasive Kamala Harris preened, posed, and proffered empty platitudes”

Think he mean’t smarmy.

Whatever. It’s actually the best summary yet. Hanson actually managed to zero in on the absurd hollyweird spectacle that they termed a “debate”.

My only surprise is that anyone is surprised by what went down. It was absolutely forseeable. Trump should have been better prepared snd should fire his debate prep team en masse. His team should also hammer home the absolutely disgusting relationship between the media and the dims and where it is taking the Country. Do we really want super Communists running an all but destroyed economy with partisan cheerleaders masquerading as journalists lying to us about it all?

I think most of the post debate analysis has been pretty uniform.

The ONE thing that seems to have been universally missed though.

LIKEABILITY.

Harris said NOTHING about her policies, history, flip flops, etc..

And many do not pay attention, or care about politics. Those things are not even relevant.

The question is as Harris is largely an unknown commodity.. Did she come off as “likeable”?

I think the viuals of smiling, fingers on chin and gesticulating go against her.

And respecially have hit women more as unlikeable or “phony”

Ping! Out to the Victor Davis Hanson list

Harris confirmed that she was slicker. But her habitual happy-face nodding has been seen over the last 90 days as facilitating her shallowness, stonewalling, and evasions.

Calling Trump names and then decrying the poisonous soup that politics has become. Very typical Harris.

I’m not sure that there is preparation to prepare a human being to be set on by three liars, who insult you, don’t let you speak for an hour.
Trump showed amazing stamina and more equanimity than I could have managed.
I’m not sure who is responsible for setting the standard his performance should have met but I’d like to review the examples of someone else who met those standards in a similar situation rather than in the theatre of the standard setter’s mind.

I would absolutely agree with you. It was a Herculean task and one that few could probably pull off. That being said, Trump missed so many opportunities to land punches. He allowed himself to get distracted and argue things like rally size and other issues that just don’t matter. He should have expected all the baseless attacks like Covid and Afghanistan and Charlottesville and J-6. Each one of those could have been dismissed with a sentence or two and then a substantive broadside about Kamala & the dims and the disastrous actions/agenda. Had Trump been prepared to counter everything in that manner he would have destroyed her definitively.

Her facial expression were probably the same expression used by SS when they listened to the Jews begging not to be pushed into the boxcars.

“Trump should have been better prepared snd should fire his debate prep team en masse.”

You’re likely making the erroneous assumption that Trump listened to and took bad advice from his prep team, when in fact they might have counseled him well and he ignored them.

Better still, he should never have agreed to debates on ABC or CNN. At some point, Trump needs to realize that the media which hates him needs him far more than he needs them.

But it's hardly a Trump-only problem - Republicans in general keep going back to the MSM, which treats them like garbage. Tom Cotton was just on ABC and CNN too. Abused housewives have nothing on Republican politicians.

DJT was swamped with incoming - at least 25 lies to bat down while simultaneously presenting his policies and outlook for the future. phew! so they spent more time on that strategy with her, ratherthan bothering to develop policy and getting her to understand and articulate it. so, she is another sock puppet. as for DJT’s passion, he is genuinely worried about the state of things, more so than any of us because he knows so much more. i think it is righteous outrage and frustration- a good thing. we need more of it.

Shoulda coulda but in reality who has been able to do that in a similar situation.
I think it’s unfair to place impossible expectations on anyone. We must all be judged in context. Instead of gaining our respect for going into the snakes den knowingly for America and making many good counter-ripostes, exposing numerous KH lies & flaws, Trump is blamed for not doing better.

We can imagine any triumph and the steps to achieve it. The doing is much harder. Where is the example of the man or woman that had a resounding success 3:1, attacked with lies, had their truths called lies and was insulted and interrupted nonstop?

Trump supporters need to do better. This is not like having a favorite ball team where you assail the players for errors, real or imagined. This is a battle for the life & soul of our Country, not a game. Like Israelis who constantly attack their own team and embolden Hamas, people who nitpick Trump rather than understanding the nature of the opposition and the immense efforts he is undertaking are creating the conditions to cede America to the left, the NWO and the Neocons. A demand for perfection is the enemy of the good.
