U.S. Navy Personnel from the USS Wasp were Captured and had Hoods Placed over their Heads in Izmir, Turkey

• identified as the Turkish Youth Union, they physically attacked and attempted to abduct the sailors, placing sacks over their heads while chanting anti-American slogans like “Yankee go home.”
—— This occurred after the USS Wasp had conducted joint training exercises with Turkish assault ships in the Mediterranean and had just arrived in Izmir.

• The group responsible for the attack justified their actions by claiming that U.S. soldiers carry the “blood of our soldiers and thousands of Palestinians on their hands.”

• Turkish authorities swiftly detained 15 members of this group following the incident.

• The U.S. Embassy confirmed the safety of the service members involved.

I recall the peg in the head scene from Midnight Express every time I hear this line from Airplane.

A major reason why societies break apart is because some members of those societies see no benefit from being a member. Below is the youth unemployment numbers for Turkey. But those numbers likely seriously understate the actual numbers. Also, some ethic groups are likely to be more like 90 Percent unemployed due to prejudice and other social reasons. The issue is not something as simple as an image problem. It’s systemic and widespread. On top of that the current president has seriously mishandled the economy for a long, long time. He runs it on his own, personal economic theory which reality is calling, “trash.”

“Youth Unemployment Rate in Turkey increased to 17.60 percent in June from 15.90 percent in May of 2024. Youth Unemployment Rate in Turkey averaged 18.75 percent from 1988 until 2024, reaching an all time high of 27.00 percent in August of 2019 and a record low of 11.00 percent in September of 2000. source: Turkish Statistical Institute”

“Turkish authorities swiftly detained 15 members of this group following the incident.”

Now authorities in Colorado need to learn how to detain gang members who threaten Americans living in rental units.

Image how angry we would be today if Turkish authorities had said the whole thing was just the imagination of the soldiers.

Years ago I was in Turkey when nonsense in the Middle East go going strong. The attitude of the Turks was “time to march.” The Turks are a very disciplined people, used to rule the Middle East and have a lot of contempt for the folks perpetrating the nonsense going. That does not mean they feel friendly towards the US and our forever war expand the grift of the MIC empire. But they are not uncivilized folks. And their country is one of the most productive countries on that side of the Atlantic Ocean.

I’ll just say from my visits there...98 percent of Turks are hospitable people. But you can never be sure of bumping into the 2 percent.

Every country has a full spectrum of individuals. The good, the bad, and the crazy. One reason that America is so stable is that somebody in the worst circumstances can rise to be a famous basketball player, football star or rock icon. It used to be they could start in the mail room and twenty years later be CEO.

It’s unlikely that people in most other countries from the poorest sectors have anywhere near those opportunities. It isn’t the productive, employed, happy Turks who are threatening Americans. It’s those marginalized groups who, probably rightly, feel put upon and powerless. Rape and terror are the same thing. People trying to feel powerful.

By-the-way, that upward mobility that has characterized the American experience, probably largely ended more-or-less recently. Expect more dangerous and damaging displays from the underclass. I’m hoping the upcoming election will be a galvanizing event that puts America back the way it was.

I’m guessing that the sailors were well off the beaten path. I knew a guy who was a medic on a destroyer. He said some of the guys would go looking for hard narcotics the moment they got to shore. Sometimes, they’d get their a$$e$ kicked. Not saying that’s what happened, but something like that is probably possible. I’m sure the tourist areas are well patrolled. In Mexico for example, if the cops find somebody hassling the tourists, they get a warning. If they persist, they get a beating.
