Retired teacher here. The test scores are disastrous for a couple of reasons, one of which has nothing to do with race. Kids in school have lost two to three years of classroom learning because of the China virus. Kids now in fourth, fifth and sixth grade are showing the results.
And then there’s the inherent racism of low (or in many cases) no expectations—for both black students and theirteachers in many parts of the country. Oregon has dropped the requirement that students be able to demonstrate that they can read or do math to graduate from high school, because that’s ‘racist’.
If you expect and require nothing, that’s what you’ll get.
Every kid I know whose parents had them reading and performing some sort of home learning during covid has not have a problem. Sitting at home and watching Sponge Bob and eating Cheetos is what did it. I’d be willing to bet that no Asian students so any sign of being behind.
Own your kids’ education, do not rely on the government nor teachers.
