Yep. The Romans were arrogant.They thought the rot really didn’t matter. After all, the Empire was eternal. So there was no need to take any corrective action. Party on!

Invading barbarians took advantage of this.

Rome collapsed from without. We will almost certainly collapse from within.

This has been a constant theme of Prof. Hanson in his book “The End of Everything” and many of his recent podcasts. Civilizations either cannot see their demise brewing or they willfully ignore all the signs and are incapable of corrective action. They see the barbarians at the gates and think “We are strong, they cannot harm us.”
