The US/EU Axis of Evil has spent the last 30 years trying to keep Russia separated from the rest of Eastern Europe.
After spending the entire post World War II period turning Western Europe into one giant Blue State of Godless decadence, the potential of an Eastern European Red State Flyover country is their worst nightmare.
