I was bidding a project for PDVSA, they required the equipment’s serial number to be acid etched inside of the unit. The item was a large electric motor. I could not find any MFG which offered this etching, or would stop production to allow an outside etching company to handle. I informed the customer and also ask why the very unusual requirement. The answer was they had a theft problem. I explained to them that the large, 12,500 pound motor was not a theft problem, because you had to get a crane, a large of truck to hold the motor and the personnel that could unhook a medium voltage motor. So I said you have an organized crime problem and acid etching is not gonna stop them.
Quite telling how many people and businesses are moving out of that formerly nice state!
