Anybody have more info on Opus Dei? Pro or Con?
Politically, they aren't as conservative as (for instance) TFP (Tradition, Family, Property).
Their founder Jose-Maria Escriva is canonized, though not without controversy.
Originally, they had a personal prelature, being directly under the Pope. This gave them a LOT of autonomy. Francis made some changes, weakening them:
(From perplexity.ai) In 2022, Pope Francis issued an apostolic letter called "Ad charisma tuendum" which made some changes to Opus Dei's status:
It transferred responsibility for Opus Dei from the Dicastery for Bishops to the Dicastery for the Clergy. It decreed that the head of Opus Dei can no longer become a bishop
They usually go along with whatever comes out of Rome without much in the way of pushback, good or bad. They are not active on behalf of the Traditional Latin Mass.
HOWEVER, at least the NYC branch seemed to work behind parents' backs to recruit minors, employing secrecy, even when the parents' faith and morals are unquestionable. They keep a pretty strong spiritual grip on members. I don't think it falls into "cult" status, but it gets closer to the line than I am comfortable with. They have both clerical and lay members. They focus on converting elites under the idea that if you convert a person who influences many other people, more good gets done. They have had some notable successes in this area. In a way, they are trying to fill a gap left by the Jesuits when they went crazy.
