The reality is most likely that Team Biden was trying to bluff Trump on the debate issue and it back fired.
If you look back, Biden began taunting Trump about how Biden really wanted to debate Trump but Trump as afraid to debate Joe because Joe had kicked his ass in debates so many times . The Biden goal was to maneuver Trump into rejecting debate terms to manufacture a false narrative that Trump was unwilling and unable to debate President Trump because Trump was afraid Biden would beat him so badly .
In reality, Biden had no intention of debating but was instead trying to suck Trump into bad faith debate negotiations using outrageous debate terms so one sided and unfavorable that Trump would never accept.

I tend to agree as well. They didn’t think Trump would agree to the ridiculous debate terms. I think they are really trying to usually no audience thing to make him back out as they know he likes the adore crowds. As you said, he called their bluff And just stood there and watched him self-destruct and let him do it

I wouldn't know for sure. But Joe may be somewhat functional 6 months ago. But he's getting worse now. That's the nature of his illness. He's declining really rapidly. So the drugs are no longer working.
His handlers thought that they could get by with the debate in June. Joe survives. He'll do better in the polls. All of a sudden, he's back in the game so they can pull off the fraud again.
