The Remarkable GOP Convention
WFB ^ | 19 July 2024 | Matthew Continetti

There's never been a political speech like Donald Trump's address to the 2024 Republican National Convention. The former president's narration of the attempt on his life was gripping television. When he kissed the fireman's helmet of Corey Comperatore, the husband and father who was killed during the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, last weekend, he created an indelible image. The Trump who appeared on stage was humble, gracious, contemplative.

Then, a half hour into the speech, Trump began to improvise. He talked. And talked. He was the Trump we are used to seeing on the campaign trail: garrulous and sarcastic, cracking jokes, championing his record, describing goals for a second term. At length. The speech must have set a record for longest convention address. If Trump wanted to prove he could speak with greater passion and for a longer period of time than President Biden, he did so. He also left this television viewer exhausted.

Get a good night’s sleep tonight and you will not remember the fatigue. It was a great speech.

The guy just almost got his head blown off.

I’d be in a reflective mood too.

Youtube exists to watch long speeches that occur late in the evening.

He chose a running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (Ohio), who has done more than anyone to provide policy substance to "Trumpism" and who, at age 39, will play a role in American politics for many years to come.

I would suggest that Steve Bannon, Victor Davis Hanson, and even Angelo Codevilla (RIP) have provided more policy substance and needed philosophical underpinnings than Vance, unless you are talking strictly about elected officials. But Vance was elected after President Trump was removed.

The ER Dr. who tried to help Correy said it was two days before the shock wore off and it hit him the gravity of what he’d just been through.

The convention was so inspiring that the party POO BAHS should consider having all the next conventions is Milwaukee; would save on site-selection efforts and cost.

...he did so. He also left this television viewer exhausted.

Yeah, right. But people have no problem sitting and listening 90 minutes to a stand-up comedian. Maybe the author doesn't much approve of Trump.

What he did last night was what he does in his rallies. He does a speech, he gives shout outs, he talks about his plans and his accomplishments, he reflects along the way, he embellishes and entertains and he gets reflective then he wraps it up by commenting on the state of the country then he cheers for what we will be

Anyone claiming to be suffering has never gone to the symphony or a Yankees game or a fishing trip and been a good sport/ been re invited

Trump has been campaigning for the past 4 years

He does rallies every six weeks or so for 4 years. Many people follow every one. Some travel along as regulars. Makes zero difference that he had not had a running mate

The democrat party doesn’t have a candidate and we’re getting into late summer

That’s amazing

Some people get bored some get tired. There’s no awareness or shots of the faces in the crowd that are dozing waiting for the finish.thats because the news media does not cover his rallies

The Fox hosts are all amazed at the crowd going along with Trump rally-dom

They can not believe they’re ot of the loop. They wonder ‘did we miss something?’

They won’t believe the answer which is ‘em…yes.’

Those who are complaining the speech was too long, too bad. After everything he’s been through, he’s earned it.

“I’ll ADMIT to nodding off during the speech..but then I always do that about the same time reading a book or whatever.”

Trumps speeches are for everyone. And his patterns do not follow the norm

So people get drowsy in the middle so what

He always finishes strong

The democrats don’t even have a candidate much less a running mate

Trump’s been campaining for four years, as one should for a presidential race

“ You forgot the opera!”

I thought of that but comparing a Trump rally speech to other opera would be incorrect.

He DID have them do Nessun Dorma at last night’s close- from Puccini’s Turandot

What is the meaning behind Nessun Dorma ?

In a whimsically sociopathic move, the Princess decides that ‘None shall sleep’ (the literal translation of ‘Nessun dorma’) in the entire kingdom until Calaf’s name is discovered. If none of her subjects are able to come up with the correct name, all of them (ALL OF THEM) will be executed.

It is worth it to sit through all of Turandot for Nessun Dorma.
