Biden administration moves to bolster solar power in Puerto Rico

The Biden administration made a pair of announcements Thursday that aim to bolster solar energy in Puerto Rico — which frequently deals with power outages.

The Energy Department announced a conditional agreement to loan $861 million to finance the construction of two solar farms and batteries to keep the power stored even when it’s not sunny.

The department will also provide up to an additional $325 million for solar and battery storage as part of a new program aimed at helping the island’s power become more resilient to extreme weather.

The nearly $900 million loan will go to Clean Flexible Energy LLC, a joint venture between electric utility AES and energy company TotalEnergies Holdings USA.

Nothing will catch the wind better than tin roofing or solar panels!

At least with tin roofing you have a chance to reuse it.

Solar panels, not so much.

So, is the solar farm liable for the damage all those panels are GOING to cause, when they blow downwind?

More panels=more power

Not enough A/C after the next hurricane takes out the grid? Steal undamaged panels from others. If you have the money, buy stolen panels. The government money should be for upgrading and securing the grid for everyone, not creating a bunch of electrical “islands” made up of vulnerable, easy-to-steal parts.

Re: Puerto Rico

Possible play for Florida voters?

Since the 2008 Great Recession, 20% of PR's population has moved to the USA.

Half of them moved to central Florida.

Puerto Ricans are USA citizens by birth.

Yep!
The support structure for most of these islands is: More Money from America.
First hurricane and it will be destroyed and sit there waiting for $$$ from America to fix it.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t electricity in PR generated by fuel oil burning generation plants? If there is a solution - it is a robust power distribution networks that can withstand the hurricane risk, and powered by nuclear generation.

It’s Biden giving a billion dollars to buy Chinese solar panels, I bet.

Every hurricane destroys some or all of the hi voltage transmission lines on the island. This solar $$$ needs to go for underground transmission lines and sub-stations. The slowest part of putting PR back together after hurricanes are the transmission lines.

The most expensive part of putting PR back together is paying off the PR politicians.

The main reason for the outages isn’t the plants, it’s the poorly maintained infrastructure. You can’t even rely on street addresses in the majority of Puerto Rico.

“ Can you say solyndra?”

Yes, I can!
I want $1.8 billion and the Arecibo radio telescope dish. I’ll tell them I’ll line the dish with mirrors and build a thermal-solar generator. That sounds great, but not as great as sitting on the beaches of Cabo Verde with $1.5 billion in my encrypted accounts.

Those panels will make like flying Guillotines in the next hurricane. And then there's the issue with the Puerto Rican politicians are so corrupt that they make the Biedens look like pikers.

Makes me wonder though, what's the percentage for the Big Guy, standard 10%?
