The photograph of Donald Trump taken by Associated Press photographer Evan Vucci in the aftermath of an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on 14 July is gathering iconic status. To coin a phrase, the photo is "one for the history books", a defining symbol of an era plagued by political crisis, violence and upheaval in America. While there is no shortage of video footage of the horrific incident, it is this single image that will be etched into our collective memory. A reminder of the timeless power of photography. “Without question, Evan’s photo will become the definitive photo from the (assassination) attempt,” said Patrick Witty, a former photo editor at TIME, the New York Times and National Geographic.

Regrettably, the artistic celebration of Vucci’s image may only prove an escalation.

“Densely packed with markers of nationalism and authority—the flag, the blood, the urgent faces of federal agents in dark suits—it will encourage some of the darkest forces in American civic life,” Kennicott wrote in the Washington Post. “People who preach violence, who revel in its political potential, can now say that one of their own is a victim, and he was. From that, more cycles of violence are almost inevitable.”

True there is an element of luck. But Evan Vucci is a professional with years and tens of thousands of photographs to his credit. His experience and professionalism made his own luck. And he didn't care about politics in the moment; he just followed his instincts.
