The local cop who interrupted Thomas Crooks’ assassination attempt on Donald Trump — but failed to stop the deranged gunman from squeezing the trigger — saved the ex-president’s life, a Pennsylvania sheriff insisted Tuesday.
Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe doubled down on his defense of the Butler Township police officer who confronted Crooks at the Saturday rally and assailed online critics as “a–holes” in an interview with The Post.
Slupe argued that the officer — whose department was enlisted by the Secret Service to help during the rally — merely coming face to face with the shooter delayed what could have been a worse outcome for Trump.

How about shooting the sniper? Was that a possibility?
Oh, he pointed a rifle. Well, he’s gotta turn back around to shoot at the President.
The local cop’s action just shows us that they weren’t in on it, at least he wasn’t. It’s possible that he caused the shooter to rush, but there was still carnage. He is not getting hero status.
Objectively, no one on Earth saved Trump’s life. The shooter had 3 clear shots at Trump. One of them seems to have been bang on when the shot went out and Trump tilted.
“How about shooting the sniper? Was that a possibility?”
He was hanging on to the roof with his hands while being hoisted up by another.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle called “me to thank our office and of course other local law enforcement officers for their duties and the high respect they have for what we did.”
That’s the best endorsement he’s got?
With the stakes as high as they were, the cop failed. Not only as a cop, but as an American also. He should have stopped the threat...PERIOD. If he was not committed to saving Trump at all cost, he had no business being there.
“How about shooting the sniper? Was that a possibility?”
Or firing warning shots in the air or into the ground? The sound of gunfire would have immediately triggered SS to take Trump to the ground.
I’ve read the officer was getting boosted up by his partner and using his hands to pull himself up on the roof. Maybe his hands were not available, but couldn’t he have ducked and pulled his weapon?
Slupe has a lot of praise for his guy, but I’m not buying it.
Yeah, the same might have been done by Nancy Drew, girl detective.
The Sheriff is the a-hole. The cop prevented nothing. Trump is alive because he moved his head and the fireman is dead. The shooter was executed after he did his job. That is the truth here.
Call me and ahole if you will but his failure to stop him from squeezing off around it’s nothing short of a failure.
Yep. Sh!t flows downhill but responsibility rises to the top. In the end it’s all on Secret Service aka the Cheetos Guard.
I just don’t understand. Several reports of a ladder in the bushes against the building why not use that.
Ladder seen leading to the sniper’s nest at the site of the attempted Trump assassination.

“ He was hanging on to the roof with his hands while being hoisted up by another.”
And this happened I believe in seconds.
Trump saved Trump's life. The Secret Service and police did little. President Trump knew to duck down at the podium at the first inkling of a shooter trying to kill him.
Yet another version of, “We investigated ourselves, and found we did nothing wrong.”
But I guess I can’t blame that sheriff much for saying that. He’s just a bit player in all this. The huge portion of the blame of course goes to the Secret Service.
And nothing that sheriff could say could beat the Secret Service director’s ridiculous explanation of why there was no officer on that roof: The roof was sloped, and so it was too dangerous to assign someone there.
So hang by one hand, pull out his gun pull himself back up with gun at the ready and shoot the perp. Most cops are not action heroes.
Communication should have been the key. Radio control to say there is a person with a rifle on the roof. They would have rushed Trump to cover and the snipers could have taken the shot.
Yup. Quite a few cops insist that the job and the uniform make them heroes. Instead, to be a hero requires that you act as a hero instead of scurrying away from danger.
The question I have is why the Secret Service didn’t secure Trump if the cops had enough reason to climb onto a roof to check out a guy on it. It wasn’t just the cops climbing the roof, it was at least the two counter snipers on another roof trying to figure out I if the guy on the other roof was a threat for several minutes.
Why didn’t the cop just use the perps ladder to climb up?
