Wow.

Too bad Norman Rockwell isn’t around to paint scenes.

You are blessed.

As a kid relatives from northern parts of Michigan visited and were shocked that we locked the house doors and car doors. 1950s.

Shortly after we arrived here I needed to borrow a vehicle. A new friend said “Take mine”. When I asked for the key she just laughed. “It’s in the ignition.” It’s the norm here. House sitting, we learned that almost no one locks their doors. I asked retailers about shoplifting. Same thing. No problem at all.

We’re on an island. Miscreants can’t just drive in, steal your car and drive away. It’s really hard to be a stranger in this town for long.

Reading the local Newspaper we noted that the “Crimes” listed in the Police Report were almost entirely Fish and Game violations with ‘Improper storage of crab pots’ topping the list. Everything is listed in the weekly rag. Every call, every parking ticket, every cat rescued, every welfare check. Law enforcement consists of 10 Police officers, 2 Wildlife troopers and a USCG Cutter.

It’s an island. It’s in Alaska. There is no Mall. The weather sucks 300 days out of the year... but it has it’s benefits.
