Speculation when reasonable is tolerable but the insane you mention is usually the norm.
The truth will come out eventually, it always does. There were probably 5,000 plus cell phones taking pictures and videos.

I actually agree with both parts of your comment there. The trick is to find a balance. You don’t want to inhibit conversation. But neither do you want to spread wild rumors.
Perhaps adding a link to help defend a speculative comment would be the way to go. Or maybe just a “In my personal opinion…”.
