HOUSTON — Half a million Texans are expected to suffer through sweltering heat with no electricity into early next week after Hurricane Beryl knocked out power throughout the Houston area Monday, generating anger at the region’s large utility for failing to defend the grid from a predictable summer storm.
Food is spoiling in dormant refrigerators days after the Category 1 hurricane tore through power lines and utility poles. Hospitals are swarming with patients struggling with heat stroke. Businesses can’t function as residents are ordered to stay home, and many residents faced at least three or four more days of continued suffering.
“We don’t have anything to eat,” said Nelsey Alvarez, 34, a single mother from Honduras who said she had never faced such a power crisis in her native country, where hurricanes are common. “When they lose power, they restore it the same day.”

Exactly, I don’t know anyone living near me in Florida, who doesn’t have at least one good portable generator. Heck, we have them in 3 different boats, also!
The communist WP just stirring anger as they always do. Gotta keep everyone mad and blame it on the governor.
Why are you being so argumentative?

i.e. put somebody else at the edge of the service area, not me.
Why are you being so self-centered?
“People need to have their own backup plan. A cheap 5K BTU window air conditioner only draws about 500 watts. A Harbor Freight cheap 2000 watt gas generator is about $500.”
Dodged Beryl. Have the cheap window AC. Now just need to get the Harbor Freight generator. Or maybe spend the bucks and go for whole house Generac. Or something similar.
You are mistaken-like most hurricanes, the storm veered from the the predicted path late in the game-making landfall much farther East. If you lived in hurricane country, you’d know that those storms are not really predictable. Houston is a big blue city in a big red state-like all such places it is full of dumb liberals who can’t put on their skivvies in an emergency without help. Our governor is is a major Trump supporter and a fine lawyer who loves to sue the corrupt fed-and he’s good at it-your governor is a democrat. I’ll keep my gov, wheelchair or not-and by the way-I don’t think anyone here thinks it is cool that you are trashing a person who has a disability-I work with disabled clients-your slur on the governor’s disability is offensive...

He wasn’t being self-centered, he was just offering a logical solution, and you WERE being argumentative.
Houston did not expand organically, so connecting new communities to the grid was very ad hoc. It's like the Christmas tree wiring from the movie A Christmas Story. One blown bulb and the whole house goes dark.

There was one of the spaghetti projections that called it almost exactly right at least 4 days out. I say almost, because it did have it moving up through Texas closer to I35 and it looked like DFW would get a nice rain out of it.
Always prepare for the worst projection possible, and realize any surprises will be pleasant ones.
I just did, LOL!
They rolled the dice and crapped out. Now they are dissembling.

That whole concept is why my wife and chose San Antonio to move to when we decided it was time to escape Pennsyltucky.
A Harbor Freight cheap 2000 watt gas generator is about $500.
We just purchased a 7500 watt trifuel generator from Costco for $699. It has an electric starter and switches between gasoline, propane, and natural gas with a turn of a dial. The 30 year old 5000 watt Briggs and Stratton we converted to natural gas 20 years ago was starting to get a little tired. Our power goes out at least several times a year and sometimes doesn’t get restored for over a week. At those times I check the oil once a day and run it nonstop.
I doubt the new one will give us as good of service, but it is nice having a little more power even though that means higher fuel consumption.
Just an aside, your domino comment was unnecessary as anyone going forward with discernment could see your intent.
I live in East Texas and got hit by a tornado knocked out power for a lot of Panola Harrison Electric. I have a 7000 watt generator runs everything except central air. I have a window unit as you talked about, it was nice to be able to sleep in the cool verses the heat. Plan on upgrading next year to Generac hold house unit with a 500 gallon propane tank. Live in the country and don’t have access to NG.
I have some Houston relatives. They have survived numerous hurricanes unscathed. This time it was their turn to feel some pain. One set only lost power, while another set had a tree crash on their garage. It took out both cars and fried the home fuse box. I don't have all the details, but it doesn't sound like an all house generator would have worked in this instance..
Been lucky on the tree crash. I know that if a tree crashes the house that is a whole different problem. Most trees here are cut back somewhat from house spent bucks on that may need to do some more.
But tree shad helps with cooling a lot so there is a trade off.
No perfect place to live as far as I know.
Been in Central TX and watched tornado destroy Jarrell Tx years ago.
Look on Facebook Marketplace folks...they’re there. How do you help some people???
Look at Houston’s representative.
But look on the brightside Houston. You will minimize your carbon footprint and there will be no more hurricanes.
