What Sailer has pointed out is that the presidency carries with it serious powers, much like a throne or a Roman consulship would. It’s not a lifetime appointment and it’s not hereditary, but orders of magnitude more powerful than a Senate seat or a Supreme Court appointment.

And even the more limited powers of the Senate and the Supreme Court led Strom Thurmond and Ruth Bader Ginsburg to hang on until their dying day. This isn’t like being a checkout clerk or a gas station attendant. It’s the most powerful office in the land and the closest thing we have to king of the world. Of course he’s gonna want another title shot.
