At first I thought it odd that the UK can tell Ukraine what they can or can’t shoot at. Maybe it is like my first BB gun and my parents said that I can shoot squirrels and chipmunks - but no song birds.
Russia is coming to terms with a further reduction of its empire. Like the Ottoman empire a century ago. Russia made the first move invading Ukraine and annexing territory, then threatening the West with further invasions and military attacks. A terrorist nation, like it’s KGB proteges Iran, Iraq (former), Libya (former), Syria, Romania (former), East Germany (former) etc.
A slow realization of decline, irrelevance and ceding territory to more capable nations is a prolonged and risky process.
Let Putin relive the great battles of WWII without Western aide, in fact fighting against it. He is the fascist invader this time trying to reclaim a lost empire. It’s a good way of letting Russians come to terms with the further collapse of their empire to the rump nation of Moscow.

Has to do with how widespread the UK wants this war to be, but Europeans should keep in mind that they have virtually no air defenses remaining...for starters.
