This is the inevitable consequence of fiat inflation. As paper dollars become less and less valuable, real commodities go up in price.

It is just as true for metals as it is for food.

I remember when you could turn off the lights, lock your house and be gone for months or even years, return and find nothing missing.
Now you leave for a week or two and come back to find it destroyed by metal scroungers and vandals.
The house I live in was abandoned in 1989. When I bought it six months later it was a vandalized wreck. Took me five years to restore it to livable condition doing ALL the work myself.
New House on the farm next to me was abandoned in 2012. Within a few weeks it was a wreck due to metal scroungers and vandals. I even put up some cattle panels over the driveway to keep people out. It has now sold, the new house torn down and a new one being built by the new owners.

I worked for a company that had lots of extra railroad rails in pieces. Found out they cannot be sold as scrap without the Feds getting involved.
So I cut them into small anvils and gave them to friends. They make great door stops.
