Biden’s Strategy to Make the Race About Trump Is Suddenly in Doubt
The New York Times | Yahoo ^ | July 8, 2024 | by Reid J. Epstein

From the outset of President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, the plan for winning was to make former President Donald Trump so unpalatable that voters uneasy with the incumbent would vote for him anyway.

But now Biden is stuck in a political tailspin, with an abysmal debate performance highlighting his inability to make a case against Trump and prompting a collective national hand-wringing about his ability to do his job while an increasing number of House Democrats say he should leave the race. To get voters to focus on the threats posed by a second Trump administration, Biden’s own allies say he first must escape his current doom loop and convince voters — even and especially fellow Democrats — that he is up to the job himself.

Indeed, the Biden campaign has long sought to make Trump its focus.

That’s why Biden kicked off this year with a blistering speech about Trump’s attempt to overthrow the last election, why his allies spent millions to block the No Labels effort and why the president has tried to highlight the anniversaries of news regarding abortion rights.

And it is why Biden’s top aides thought it was a good idea to move the first debate from September to June.

“From the beginning, it’s been clear that Biden and the Democrats must make this election a choice, not a referendum on the president,” said Matt Bennett, a co-founder of Third Way, the Democratic think tank that has led efforts to stop independent and third-party candidates from siphoning votes from Biden. “That means focusing voter attention on Trump’s criminality, chaos and cruelty. Once we emerge from this period of uncertainty, the party must get back to prosecuting that case full time.”

“Biden’s Strategy to Make the Race About Trump Is Suddenly in Doubt”

When Biden gets to the “attack Trump” (he’s a liar” he’s a convicted felon”, “he pays off hookers”, “he rapes women”, (implies) that Trump is Hitler” part of his remarks he becomes unhinged/maniacal. It’s NOT a pretty sight.

Not only isn’t it working, its damaging to BIDEN!

And since its the ONLY strategy they have, Surrender is their only option.

Its OVER Joe.

That’s right.

I’d say we’re in the calm before the storm.

Biden is making it about Reagan, as it should be. He is running on passing the Sivil Rites Act and stopping the huge growth of the profiteers and the, uh, the, uh, you know the thing!

I don’t want them dead

We wanted the rats dead. Nothing to do with the two party system.

While shelling corn, we would hit a few over the head, cats and dogs had a feast. But the infestation moved. Some into the old farm house, the other buildings, the neighbors or out to the wild, back into the tunnels beneath the corn crib.

Shooting rats at the local dump used to be great fun.

The point is one event is not enough. Winning this election doesn’t solve it. Losing means we keep working on the infestation. It will take continual effort to get rid of them.

By the way, the rats moved to the bigger cities. We don’t have major infestations in rural areas anymore.

What are you afraid of coming back? Cheap gas, lower inflation, lower unemployment, lower interest rates? Are you worried about the border being secure? What is it?

I saw this and thought this is exactly what Trump should be saying. Remind them.

What about the joys of the Inflation Reduction Act? Aren’t they going to run on that?

There were over 100 people shot in Chicago over the 4th of July Weekend. Almost 20 died.

Yes, I want no part of large cities anytime soon.

I wonder what the number to dead and wounded would be if you took the total of the ten largest cities over the 4th of July long weekend?

Well, that is an interesting thought.

Probably would be frightening to actually see that number.
