‘It’s like Covid all over again’: Olympic-sized trepidation strikes Paris

When government posters recently appeared in Métro stations advising Parisians to work from home during the summer’s Olympic Games to avoid overcrowded public transport, Julie, 24, a support worker for refugees, was puzzled.

“It feels a bit like Covid lockdown all over again,” she said. “It’s like saying: ‘Parisians, stay confined to your homes, out of the way, while all this money is spent on the Games.’ Personally, I’ll stay away. I’m not happy about the idea of clearing homeless people from the city centre to make way for the Games.”

As Paris prepares for the Olympics and Paralympics, politicians, sports stars and the president, Emmanuel Macron, are trying to shore up public support for what is being billed as a “revolutionary” and radically different type of games – with half the usual carbon footprint and very little building, to avoid wasteful infrastructure investment.

Quincy Wilson is one to watch. He’s 16 years old and made his way to the 4x400 team.

I thought Parisians took a month long holiday on the Rivera during July....

August, after Bastille Day and the completion of the Tour de France.

Great call.

It was great watching him.

I loved his answer when they asked him about running at this level-

I’m running against the big dogs now!

and it is so true-he looks like a HS Jr running against men. His voice is still a little high pitched. It seemed obv to me that the rest were stressed out of their minds and he was LOLing and having a great time!

I also hope they bring Christian Coleman for the 4 X100m-

the fastest man ever fr 40-60m, he had the lead in both the 100m and 200m trials but just couldn’t hold them off. I really hope that he is selected for at least one of the men’s relay teams.

She should be more concerned over the rioting that is going to occur Sunday when Le Pen’s party wins.

Similar congestion concerns in Los Angeles 1984 and Atlanta 1996. Mrs jimfree and I did the LA games and traffic was actually rather light as many locals stepped aside.

I’m not happy about the idea of clearing homeless people from the city centre to make way for the Games.” shes for the homeless living on the streets because they have rights to and she earns her living supporting them
