Yep. So, then we need more cats. Nope, cats have fleas.
OK, so we need to poison the rodents! But then that’d likely poison more animals. And fish because the rains will come and wash the poison into the rivers. Then there will be a boil water notice, not that boiling would kill off the poison but the sheeple will have heard boil your water so much that no one questions it anymore. Dang, humans are stupid.
Nature is not meant to be a museum.
By “missed out on a good fire season”, I meant that I was not working on a dedicated fire crew that year, so I didn’t get sent out of the area to any major fires such as those around Yellowstone that year, and I didn’t make lots of overtime and hazard pay.
As it happened, the Deschutes didn’t get all that many fires that year, so the regular fire crews were able to handle things and I never got on even one fire in 1979. That’s why I went back to fire suppression in the following years.
You really need to think carefully and get all the facts before implying that people are lying. Your apology is accepted, but it should not have been necessary.
first survey 1978.

now that last account of yours sounded very typical of your higher up’s “ use it or lose it “ spending mentality and tasks of both the USFS and USBLM that i saw every year. .
nice gig they gave you.
like i said, i didnt mean to offend, but you gotta understand me and most of my friends lives were basically ended with that owl crap.
lost my job, car, truck, boat, and motorcycle to pay rent. ended up losing my marriage too .
whole towns of people lost everything over a commie lie and scam.
cuz of infiltrated commies we thought were fellow friend's and co workers who were “ wildlife biologists”.
so ya, we are a suspicious and untrusting group when it comes to accounts of owls being scarce.
sorry to stomp on your toes.
( thanks for your military service btw )
This has really got to stop. First they blamed logging, now they’re blaming other owls.
The spotted owl is a bird, not a sacrament. Repeal the ESA!
I am sorry about what you and your friends went through. Even then, I knew that the whole fable of spotted owls needing vast tracts of undisturbed old-growth forest was nonsense. I’ve seen them in cut-over areas and in fairly young second-growth. In fact, the first nest I saw was in a Ponderosa snag in the middle of a clear cut; the birds had been reported to the USFS by the loggers who cut that sale.
It was a pretty good way to spend a summer, but fighting fires was more fun and more lucrative.
I wasn’t in the military, BTW. Fire crews, even Category I such as smokejumpers (which I wasn’t) and hotshots (which I was) aren’t military.
I think in order to preserve proper, contained government, we need to “kill off” hundreds of thousands of overencroaching government.
So if you cross a Spotted Owl with a Barred Owl, do you get a Morse Code Owl?
/bad joke alert
Only the government could come up with such an insane plan.
i think i must have been looking at hot tabascos about page re mil service.
(well,, hotshot crews are a type of special forces though, and are a service to the country /-)
Lynx Hair Hoax
Do you really have faith in the government messing with the environment? Look what they did for immigration, inflation, crime.
I could never understand why leftist believers in evolution want to stop evolution in its tracks by preventing extinction to take place.
The species alarmists are the same people who want to stop climate change in its tracks.
They are chasing an unattainable result in both cases.
But then again, there are those pesky temptations called government research grants to chase.
Take my Barred Owls from my woods, and I’ll have to take matters into my own hands. I love my Barred Owls. I have nicknamed them Ollie and Olivia.
Me too.
Good training for when the same arsholes are sent out to shoot everyone in a MAGA hat.
Unless mankind is killing the spotted ones they need to back off. Nature will do what nature does.
HA! I chuckled.
Makes sense to me — speed up evolution. Why wait around for nature to do the job?
