The Soviet they created devolved into a classical Russian-style kleptocracy, albeit with a Marxist front, through WW2 and the Cold War, as we all know too well. This is what Ukraine inherited when it finally gained its' freedom in 1991. And is still dealing with 33 years later, while with the other hand fighting a hot war with Moscow since 2014.
