“Florida’s Ron DeSantis Says ‘Sexual’ Festival Caused Him to Veto $32 M. in Arts Grants”

EXCELLENT!!! Just canceling it ‘out of principle’ would, technically, be reason enough, but the idea of linking the cancellation to a bunch of perverts shows incredible political skill.

Why do we fund arts, anyway? It’s useless. Ipfunding honestly should only be for the public good, tangible good.

Maybe if we got rid of income tax, people could get really wealthy all over so that they can once again sponsor the artists they like, fully. Like the old days.

We should have a constitutional amendment that precludes governments from giving our tax money away to third parties to anything outside of law-enforcement, public works, and military defense.

Another great job by DeSantis! How I wish he would have waited until 2028. Then he wouldn’t have had so many derps hating on him.

DeSantis just sent a message to the arts community; if you dabble around with that stuff you risk getting your funding cut.

Halstead said the festival was one of 200 such events around the world that are “contributing to a global movement of artistic expression and cultural exchange.”

Please explain in detail WHY the taxpayer has to fund your artistic expression and cultural exchange...go ahead and express yourself, but do so on your own dime.

You just have to read the push-back on this to realize that he made the right decision.

There was no ability to line item veto projects.... It was all or nothing.

The legislature can fix this. Easily.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/21/opinion/arts-funding.html

The writers have a clever idea to camouflage cultural funding by equating it with highway building and maintenance. I applaud their ingenuity: Fixing a leaky roof is less controversial than supporting the art on the walls or the movie screens below.
