Personally, I think Trump made a mistake many have made, including here on FR--assuming that there were at least some people in DC looking out for the interests of the US as a whole.
Examples:
Judges for instance--recommended by the Federalist Society, but Coney-Barrett and Kavaugh seem to be not as solid as advertised.
Chris Christie on the transition team recommending Chris Wray
Bill Barr--how many here knew he defended Lon Horiuchi? That might have provided enough of a red flag to question his bonafides, although his time in DC might have suggested otherwise.

That he was told by rona mcromney, mcconnell, etc that he could only choose from their list of DS approved names.
