Trump campaign pushes for pared-down GOP platform as allies fret over abortion stance

Top advisers to Donald Trump are plotting an overhaul of the Republican Party platform that will dramatically slash its size and refocus the GOP around the former president’s agenda for a second term.

A memo from Trump campaign managers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles dated Thursday criticized past platforms as too long and too heavily influenced by special interests and outside groups. A “clear, concise and easily digestible” platform will be easier for voters to understand and harder for political opponents to attack, they wrote.

“Publishing an unnecessarily verbose treatise will provide more fuel for our opponent’s fire of misinformation and misrepresentation to voters,” the memo said. “It is with that recognition that we will present a streamlined platform in line with President Trump’s principled and popular vision for America’s future.”

The memo, obtained Saturday by CNN, was first reported by The New York Times.

The party’s most recent platform, crafted in 2016 and reapproved in 2020, spans 66 pages. A person familiar with the planning said the goal for the upcoming platform is a concise document that is “a couple dozen pages,” written in clearer language and likely reflecting Trump’s top priorities.

That person went on to say that when platform committees convened ahead of previous conventions, their meetings were attended by lobbyists and special interest groups trying to insert specific line items for their clients into the party platform. LaCivita and Wiles wrote they want a platform that will “free our Party from the constraints of Washington jargon and the shackles of lobbyist influence.”

The memo comes amid intensifying anxiety from conservative groups over the direction of the platform ahead of next month’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

I bet part of the new platform will be end of the Dept of Ed, end of payroll/income taxes, end of the FED/IRS. In favor of a national sales tax on new items.

Two dozen pages is enough.

The Declaration of Independence is on one page.

We don’t need much. Cut taxes. 2nd amendment. Secure borders. America first. Defend the Constitution. Everything else is just fluff. That’s the platform. It should all be on one page.

The reason politicians try not to take a stance on anything is because every time they do, they lose some percentage of the voters. Suppose politician X, an unknown quantity, starts out with fifty-one percent of the votes. Think Obama, who famously stood for nothing, therefore voters projected whatever they wanted onto him. Now, X takes a position on social security reform, then abortion, then assisted suicide. None of these positions are going to influence the forty-nine percent who were for the other guy. But they will influence those who were originally for X. He’ll lose a percentage of retirees, anti-abortion people, and religious people. Next thing you know, the other candidate wins.

As a voter, you already know where the Democrats stand. (Pretty firmly in the Livingroom of Hell.) So, if you want them out of office, don’t insist Trump take a stand on anything. Sorry. That’s the only way this happens.

That’s why Trump is saying we have to leave abortion to the states (which is the way it should be) so he can appeal to all the soccer moms who may vote for Biden on the abortion issue alone.

It sounds like Trump is trying to push some of the infiltrators out. More power to him.

A clear and concise platform? Yes, Trump should open that up to registered Republicans to write it. Maybe FR!

My contributions:

Any person entering the US illegally, overstaying a visa, failing to meet any condition of their stay in the US, requesting federal assistance, or being charged with any civil or criminal complaint, shall be immediately deported. In the case of a civil or criminal complaint, deportation may occur after conviction and any incarceration.

Drivers licenses issued to illegal aliens shall be terminated, else issuing state shall lose federal highway funds.

H1B and related work visas shall end once current visas expires. Recipients must return to their home country and cannot convert to any other visa or related program.

No taxes on individual-received tips.

No federal funds or facilities shall be used for abortions.

Security clearances shall terminate upon the end of immediate role or employment wherein it was required or used.

Student visas shall include a 100% tariff on all tuition, books, housing costs, and fees. The collected tariff shall be used to pay similar feeds for US citizens.

The Republican party commits to national reciprocity to the Second Amendment, including preemption of all state and local laws that infringe up on the Second Amendment.

Regarding abortion, simpler is better: The Republican party respects the Supreme Court decision that abortion is a state issue. Nationally, we commit to ending all federal-funding of abortions and ending them at any federal-controlled or owned facility. (Get the federal government out of the business of abortions!)

Health care. Bring nurses together and let them decide the new plan based on market principles but only AFTER Obamacare is given one year to wither on the vine.

Call the new program Trumpcare and make it cover everybody on Jan. 1, 2026.

You don’t need multiple pages, just a one-pager stating you will honor the oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic.

My administration will adhere to the spirit and the letter of the Constitution and see to it proper checks and balances are restored.

“...so he can appeal to all the soccer moms who may vote for Biden on the abortion issue alone.”

I don’t think soccer MOMS are the antiabortion voters. I think those are the pink haired people nobody would have intercourse with unless they’d had an entire bottle of Glenlivet’s. The other antiabortion voters are the screaming young girls who “sleep” with men they’d never, never under any circumstances marry. My mother told me, “Never sleep with a woman you wouldn’t consider marrying. I immediately looked at my parents’ marriage date and compared it to my oldest sister’s birthdate. About six months apart.

You’ll be surprised. Kansas and Ohio voted “yes” in legalizing abortion when it came up to a vote on their referendums.

****************

Trump’s position from just a political view not a moral view, is the best we anti abortion supporters can hope for at this juncture.

To push harder could actually backfire and lead to huge election losses. Which would result in Pro abortion advocates writing laws at the federal level that won’t be good for future “humans in the womb.”

The funny thing is that Muchael Pence is calling for a federal ban on abortion. 🤨

Sounds like Trump may FINALLY have control over the Republican Party.
