I am having a harder time every day understanding what kind of person grows up wanting to be a “DEFENSE ATTORNEY”.
The one thing I can think of is that sometimes the accused is not guilty.

To his credit, he did not deny his guilt, and apologized to the family. Of course, that does not have any bearing on whether or not he should be executed.

The “justice” system is slow and imperfect if it’s you or me that gets killed. When it involves one of our betters, things move quickly.
I remember a guy walked into a courthouse in Fort Worth TX and shot a lawyer about 20 years ago and they had a needle in his arm in maybe a year.
