Read the whole book, especially he first chapter which begins with an absolutely lyric description of the Nile and its essential role in the development and maintenance of Egyptian and central African society and culture. The Nile, in fact, is the main geographical corridor that connects northern and southern Africa.

I currently have the whole book in PDF. In addition, I just went to E Bay and discovered the original two volume edition is now available, unexpurgated, in a sumptuous, highly annotated, new two volume edition that’s about 1,500 pages vs. the 1,000 of the original. It costs $157.55 and I may have gotten the last one. Here’s the URL:
