AS I would not step upon any flag that people have died to defend (their blood has rendered it scared—even if its cause was unjust) I would not burn of desecrate any holy book that was at the core of any religious belief system. Not the Koran or the Vestas of Zoroastrians,The saying of Confucius, The Book of Mormon, or even the Egyptian Book of the Dead—The Iliad or the Gospel of Thomas. Any faith where men have sought out God in his many forms is sacred in my view.

Any one of those fanatical members of the death cult can accuse you of anything, and you’re dead. I’ll NEVER go to any country where sharia law is in effect.

You are right. It is interesting how these digs are worked into everything.

The author omits to mention that blasphemy was already punishable by death under Islamic religious law for over a millenium before the British touched the subject in India. I’d suspect the British motive was to 1) reduce the power of Islamic imams, et al; and, 2) to reduce lynchings/reprisals/social unrest by putting accusations of blasphemy under the control of the State, with trials, defenses, evidence, and such, rather than letting enraged mobs murder people based on rumors.

There’s often someone on FR who’s been somewhere or know firsthand about something. This time it’s me. Yes, I was a tourist to Pakistan.

Why? Because I was working in Kabul Afghanistan for several years, and Islamabad was in a new country for me, safer, cleaner, and a place to visit over a long weekend. As it was Easter weekend I attended a Protestant church service.

There’s still some British influence. Sunday is a day off. In Afghanistan the weekend was Friday and sometimes Saturday. Cars drive on left like in Britain.

Look at the incredible wording he uses. It’s criminal to see English in such a horrible state as it is today. (Regarding Winston Churchill quote)

Read the whole book, especially he first chapter which begins with an absolutely lyric description of the Nile and its essential role in the development and maintenance of Egyptian and central African society and culture. The Nile, in fact, is the main geographical corridor that connects northern and southern Africa.

I currently have the whole book in PDF. In addition, I just went to E Bay and discovered the original two volume edition is now available, unexpurgated, in a sumptuous, highly annotated, new two volume edition that’s about 1,500 pages vs. the 1,000 of the original. It costs $157.55 and I may have gotten the last one. Here’s the URL:

Good luck.

I’ve always thought Muslims are the true People of the Book. That’s what they call Christians, but Christians are actually the People of the Word.
