President Donald Trump left a $500 tip at a restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and wrote, “Vote Trump, No Tax on Tip” on the check.
In a video shared to X by Margo Martin, Trump’s deputy director of communications, Trump can be seen writing on a check at Tony and Nick’s Steaks, and saying, “No tax on tips” as people in the background can be heard cheering.
“No tax on tips!” Trump says.
A photo posted to X by Martin shows a group of employees holding up the check signed by Trump, with the words, “Vote Trump. No tax on tip.”
Nicky Lucidonio, who owns the cheesesteak restaurant, Tony and Nick’s Steaks, told Fox Business that it was an “unbelievable” moment and that the former president answered questions and signed “hats” and “everything.”
“It was just unbelievable,” Lucidonio told the outlet. “He was talking to people, you know, they’re asking questions. He’s answering them. He’s signing hats. He signed and everything.”
Lucidonio explained to the outlet that a woman had come into his restaurant on Friday telling him she had a “big order” of roughly 200 sandwiches.
“Wow, 200 cheesesteaks. I said, ‘Great, who’s it for?’ She wanted to help me. She said it’s for some special people,” Lucidonio told the outlet.
During a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this month, Trump promised that if elected president, his administration would eliminate taxes on tips for people who work in service industry-related jobs.
“So, this is the first time I’ve said this. And, for those hotel workers and people that get tips, you’re going to be very happy,” Trump said at the time. “Becaus....

Wow. You’re just doubling down.
when you pay for your meal you re paying for the product..when you tip you are paying for the labor
My apologies - I thought you were saying Trump was pandering just like Biden.
Agree.
Biden tried leaving a big tip but couldn’t stop himself from taking out 10% of it for himself. An old Big Guy habit.
Only if they give you the money as a gift, amount up to them, and optional.
If you want to hazard your time on the possibility they will give you a gift and it will be enough over the sum you value your time at to be more net than by paying the tax you are free to do so.
You may guilt trip some people but many will stiff you. I would not do business with you, just as I don’t take “free” walking tours. On the other hand I don’t eat out unless I can afford a 20% tip. I spent several years waitressing and I appreciate courteous efficient service.
Not accurate.
#1 18k this year probably 19K 2025. It changes every year.
#2 The giver is not responsible for taxes. The giver is responsible for reporting the gift to The IRS. The sum over the yearly exemption for that year is assessed against their lifetime exemption in force at their death. At that point if their exemption is exceeded the estate pays estate tax on the excess.
Those who wish to ensnare and control Americans know how to use a paper trail. How exactly to these paragons justify taxing an amount for expected tips based on the Government estimates even when the staff has not received tips?
Just pay them regularly, already.
Regularly with tips may not be such a good solution:

That doesn’t work for several reasons. It would put a high % of restaurants out of business. It’s the difference between a bonus & a salary increase. Most restaurant businesses are very low profit margin. Raising salaries raises their nut.
Salary does not discriminate as efficiently between good service and poor service. Leaving the reward to the patron is more direct and shapes behavior better.
I agree with the poster upthread who said, paraphrased, “when anyone gets a bit of the government boot off their neck all conservatives should rejoice”.
While the Government is taxing the service class I don’t think anyone should fool themselves that it’s saving the rest of us anything. The majority of taxation is wasted and consumed by those that apportion the budget in any case.
>Smart people will simply reduce the percentage they tip to compensate with the net effect being the status quo.<
No, they will continue tipping their server for a great job.
Not the percent listed on the ticket.
If Byedone can give debt relief, then DT can give tip relief.
Sorry, pal—I just disagree with you.
And if every other employer needs to pay at least a minimum wage, restaurants ought to have that requirement as well. Government thrives on giving benefits to some at the expense of others, and we shouldn’t endorse that.

No worries. We may agree better on another topic another day.
Yes, we may.
Of course I can imagine that the IRS won't look kindly on people who perform high value services getting large "tips."
Most people don't think about whether or not the post tax money they spend is going to be taxed again. Do you think about what percentage of the cost of an ice cream cone is taxable as net earnings to the Dairy Queen, and choose the menu item with the highest cost of goods?
Tony and Nick’s Steaks — the best.
Says someone who has never waited tables. It is a hard, often thankless and sometimes dangerous job. People don’t go through life aspiring to be table servers. It’s a hard job for hard up people. Ever waited on someone with bulimia, for instance, and had to bus a plate of vomit?
