Leadership of the Oklahoma Senate was in limbo on Wednesday following the defeat Tuesday of Ada Republican Sen. Greg McCortney in the primary election.

McCortney had been elected by colleagues to be the next president pro tem of the Senate following the departure of Sen. Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma City, who was term-limited and could not run for reelection this year.

McCortney, who was first elected to the Senate in 2016, emerged as a leader as lawmakers dealt in ensuing years with challenges ranging from serious revenue shortfalls to early regulation of the medical marijuana industry to the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was the Senate majority floor leader this year.

The article is paywall blocked. Is this good news or bad news? I can’t tell if he was MAGA or RINO.

That’s odd. It wasn’t for me. I don’t pay for news articles. I use Bing. Maybe that’s why I could view it.

Another article referred to him as moderate. So good riddance. Their cozy little power-succession scheme was abruptly interrupted.

McCortney was a moderate at best. He was hand picked by the previous President Pro Tempore as his replacement. There was a lot of pushback on McCortney getting the leadership position, but it looked like some back room deals were made to get him elected by the caucus. The voters fixed it.

Just as true today as when the words wee first written.

Here’s the sentence from another article,

“McCortney, considered to be more moderate than some of his GOP colleagues, was the Senate Majority floor leader and was slated to become the next president pro tem.”

It’s just a case of an organization that got in a rut and fell asleep. Happens every day.

Shake ups are needful, as long as they don’t lurch leftward.
