The Shasta Indian Nation will be returned 2,820 acres of ancestral land in northwestern California, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday.
The land return is the largest in California history and comes as a reconciliation effort to apologize to Native communities for historical injustices, the release said.
Newsom's office said he discussed the land return with the Shasta Indian Nation earlier this month after visiting the Klamath River dam removal project, which is on ancestral lands near the California-Oregon border. The project is the largest dam removal and river restoration in the country intended to restore land and more than 300 miles of salmon habitat. The 2,820 acres of land being transferred are associated with the dams, the governor's office said.
Several dams along the Klamath River are being removed as part of the land return. The Copco and Iron Gate dams are two of the four that have already been drained.
The land was originally taken from the Shasta people more than 100 years ago after the Copco dam was constructed, Shasta Indian Nation Chairperson Janice Crowe said in a statement.
"The Shasta Indian Nation is pleased with the Governor’s decision to support the return our ancestral lands and sacred sites," Crowe said. "Having access to our ceremonial sites, including the site of our First Salmon Ceremony, is critical to the spiritual and emotional health of our people."
The transfer of land announcement also comes during the fifth anniversary of the state's formal apology to California Native Americans, which created a Truth and Hearing Council. The council includes a state tribal advisor and representatives from Native American tribes who are responsible for drafting a report by Jan. 1, 2025 with "findings regarding the historical relationship between the state and Native Americans," according to the government's office.

And who did thre Shasta’s take it from? Will they now give it back to them?
The Indians were fighting over and conquering and losing land to each other lfor millennia before the Europeans came and conquered them all.
It is a noble ideal, but nothing ever seems to get better, and often gets worse. Poverty, idleness and alcoholism thrive in these reclaimed areas. I do not know of a solution.
They should rebuild the Copco and Irongate dams to power the casinos.

They are usually financed by unknown overseas backer - the Nates run them but ownership is very murky. Its basically a criminal enterprise to soak up blue eyed money for the ruling families who live in life styles they want to be accustomed to - rich and anonymous.
Ordinary tribal members without family connections get discounts on the drugs the ruling families sell them, which are in turn bought from Mexican cartels those ruling families allow to operate on the Res.
Anything “native American” operating on a Reservation is twisted, evil (think black magic) and criminal. Nats of the same tribe off the Res are just ordinary people who fled the Res, as have most US Indians.

Or finding a job like every other American. Do you still practice the European/African/Asian culture of your ancestors, wear their clothing, eat their foods etc.

Whole towns were given - all the people living there had to move, having lost their homes, jobs and all income. The lucky ones found abandoned buildings elsewhere to live in.

You are being conned by the tribes into feeling sorry for them and to give them special rights you do not have.
I did the math too. That’s really not a whole lot of land, an area slightly larger than 2 miles by 2 miles.

America is about the rule of law.
And freedom. As in a person doesn’t tell another person how to conduct his/her life, and vice versa, as long as each follows the rule of law.
Many Indian treaties were signed by the government, and then ignored (not honored) and forgotten.
I would not claim that it is a requirement (legal or otherwise) that “assimilation” (consisting in part in dishonoring signed treaties) is a prerequisite to live in America.

I don’t think that a society’s value is measured by European/African/Asian wealth standards alone.
At some point, we probably have enough 7/11s, piggly wigglies, taco bells, and pizza huts. want another one? or another three, or ten, or 5 hundred? ok. but also, treaties signed by the American government should be honored.
Otherwise for the people who took those treaties at face value, there is in practice no rule of law in America.
The alternative to the rule of law is might makes right. Is that your preference? You say “assimilation” but “might makes right” seems to be your real argument.
America has been about assimilation of peoples and cultures since its founding - assimilation does not mean a Borg style collective, but rather a shared set of values, a common language, and culture.
Most US Indians do not live on reservation for good reasons, and because they are assimilated into America. You would know that if you were an American.
You seem to value separation, Balkanization, of the US which it is definitely NOT about.
“Rule of law” is a difference matter having to do with governance, not to be conflated with assimilation/culture/values/language/etc.
And they will have names like Mohammed and Omar.
