Absolutely correct.
It was a perfectly local recognition and celebration of what happened in Galveston at the end of the Civil War. Blacks, whites, and Hispanic Texas knew generally the story of the incident and celebrated in appropriate ways. While taken seriously for it’s importance, the celebrations were low key and centered on families’ different traditions. The vagueness of the date to celebrate made it even better.
I enjoyed this Texas day . . . right up until the non-Texas Left found out about it and weaponized it to postpone a big Trump rally in Tulsa innocently scheduled on that day. I now live in Oklahoma and I assure you I never ever heard of an Okie who knew a thing about it all.
