In print newspaper days they called in “the silly season” when serious stories were few in the late summer and stories of tabloid style Bigfoot, UFOs and ghost visits took up space in the papers.
The “silly season” term was said to have entered the language with an 1861 description of the time “when Parliament and the Law Courts are not sitting”.
