Used to be that a dog was said to be given to a farmer.
I grew up on a farm. We had lots of dogs and relatives sent intractable dogs to us. The strange thing was that they instantly became very good dogs--somehow they immediately sensed our rules and adhered to them. We didn't have to re-train them.

Some learned, some did not that they would be shot if they chased livestock.
