So I am guessing that this all went down with full knowledge of secret service watching and documenting what happened and with whom.

The Secret Service would be derelict in their duties if they didn't know as much as they could about the people who are getting close to the ones who they are protecting. If the Secret Service did not vet mistresses to some degree, it would provide an easy access to someone who wants to harm the protected.
