The oldest Shingles vaccine - Zostavax - is no longer available in the USA.

Shingrix, the newest vaccine, has been in use in the USA since 2017.

Shingrix has much higher efficacy (90% plus) than Zostavax (50%-60%).

However, Shingrix has more reported side effects than Zostavax had.

I got Zostavax in 2015. One day later, I ran a slight fever and broke out in a light, full body rash for 36 hours.

I had Shingles three times before I got Zostavax.

Zero times since Zostavax.

I plan to get Shingrix, too, since Medicare pays for it, but it is not on my urgent to do list.

I’ve not had a shingles vaccine yet. I’m holding off on getting the flu vaccine- I haven’t had the flu since I was a teenager. I’ve sailed thru all the outbreaks and we’ve had for over 50 years. I have been on immunosuppressants for over 3 years. At this point I fear shingles more than the flu.
