How they felt was not the whole issue. Jesus told them the truth about themselves that they needed to hear, and by that point they needed to hear it clearly and forcibly--as Ephesians 4:29 says, He discerned that was their need at that moment.

Yes, they needed to be told they were snakes in the grass, whited sepulchres full of dead men’s bones, fools, etc. And they thanked him and felt oh so blessed.
