On July 5, 1945 they held an election that resulted in Clement Attlee being elected Prime Minister, replacing Churchill.

The war in Europe was ended two months earlier, May 8th, which is what mattered to Britons. The war in the Pacific, which was 99% an American war, had just five weeks to go.

And you do know that in the UK the Prime Minister is not elected directly, don't you?

Hindsight is 20-20. At that time no one had any idea the war was going to end that quickly. We were getting ready to launch Operation Downfall. the two invasions of the Home Islands. (On a side note, my Dad was in the Philippines getting amphibious landing training.) Oh yeah, you also denigrated the large British Commonwealth contributions to the Pacific theater operations with your 99% remark.
