Toll roads do the same, but they are cumbersome, requiring toll booths, workers, cash, and long lines.

That's so 20th century. Toll roads have gone boothless with RFID decals on the windshields and photos of the license plates that are registered with the state.

Drivers open up "FastPass" or "EZPass" accounts and load minimum amounts from credit cards that are automatically deducted when driving through an automated toll station.

This way, drivers don't need to provide GPS data, odometer readings, won't be charged for out-of-state driving, etc.

Yep. In San Francisco, all the toll booths over the bridges are automated - there is an automatic photo taken of your license plate and you are sent a bill, around $12.00 now.

A local told me the toll booth operators were about to go on strike so the city automated the entire system.
