That region is actually a ‘federal subject’ of Russia (the annexed portion of what was the Ukraine). The Ukraine has been bombing and shelling that region for some time.

The MSM is trying to make it seem like something new is happening. I believe Putin’s red line warning about ‘firing on Russia’ was for traditional Russian borders because Putin did not escalate (nuclear) for the Ukrainian bombing of that region in December of 2023.

The US gave missiles to the Ukraine but limited the range (software programming) so that they could not be fired into non-disputed Russian land. But that doesn’t prevent the Ukraine from firing missiles on the region they had been bombing and shelling for quite some time.

Well Zelensky was on another World begging tour last I knew...so he isn’t even in the country....

Well I looked further and as far as I can see Ukraine is very limited in use’ of missiles. In other words They can't just start firing into Russia as they wish. However if or not they abide is another question...only time will tell. At any rate Russia will respond though we likely won't hear about it in our media.
