They were invaded and annexed by the Soviet Union - genocidal dictatorship on a par with the 3rd Reich with ridiculous economic system and traditional russian primitivism, depravity and overall shitness on top of that. A significant part of their population was murdered and replaced by russians, they rest had to live in poverty and fear.
